Maze Pouch (Cosmetic Bag) - Crochet Pattern

Hi everyone!

The Maze Pouch is one of those pieces that quickly becomes part of your everyday life. Crocheted with the simple mosaic technique, it has a clean and geometric look, but what makes it truly special is its versatility.

It can be your little project bag for yarn and hooks, a cozy pouch for crochet tools, a makeup bag, a pencil case, or even a small companion for walks with just the right size for your phone and keys. Whatever you choose, it adapts with ease.

With just a few color choices, you can make it your own — soft and minimal, bold and bright, or somewhere in between. It is practical, stylish, and timeless, the kind of handmade piece you will always find useful.

About Yarn

I love making the Maze Pouch with cotton yarns. When I paired Drops Safran (50 g / 160 m | 1.8 oz / 175 yards) with Drops Muskat (50 g / 100 m | 1.8 oz / 109 yards), it felt like the perfect match. Together, they create fabric that is crisp in stitch definition, soft in the hand, and beautifully structured — everything I wanted this pouch to be.

Cotton makes the pouch durable and elegant at the same time. It holds its shape well, so whether you use it as a project bag, a cosmetic pouch, or for everyday essentials, it will stay practical and timeless.

Of course, you can use any yarn you already have and love. Don’t hesitate to experiment — each fiber brings its own character, making your pouch unique and personal.

I also recommend these cotton yarn alternatives. Choose yarns that provide good stitch definition and enough structure for mosaic crochet:

When substituting, remember to check your gauge and adjust the hook size if needed. That way, your pouch will keep the right proportions and shape.

Mosaic Crochet Techniques

Mosaic crochet simplifies the creation of intricate and colorful patterns by utilizing a combination of single crochet stitches and drop-down double crochet stitches. With this technique, you work the single crochet stitches in the back loop, which creates a textured effect, while the drop-down double crochet stitches are used to form the design elements. This method allows for flexibility in color changes and produces visually captivating results.

How To Read Stitch Chart

In mosaic crochet, the chart is read from right to left for each round. Each round alternates between colors, as specified in the left column. A is a white color, B is a pink color. The entire round is worked in the designated color, You will not change color throughout a round. A blank box signifies a single crochet in the back loop only (blo), while an X indicates a drop-down double crochet stitch.

Sizing

The instruction for the Maze Pouch includes ONE size for canvas: 8.3” x 4.7”.

This pattern is also very easy to ADJUST so you can customize the size to be perfect for you!

  • To adjust the length: The pattern is worked in multiples of 12 stitches
  • If you want to adjust the height, you need to add extra rounds in groups of 16 (repeating rounds 4 to 19 from the chart) to keep the design looking correct. For reference, the motif repeat is enclosed within the red frames in the chart, clearly marking the structure of the pattern. This means that whenever you need to adjust the height, you can repeat rows 4-19 in full sets to keep the design consistent.

Chart

This mosaic pattern is a “neverending” pattern which makes the laptop sleeve adjustable in multiples of 12 and repeat rows 4-19 (in red frame).

Looking at the chart, you will be reading each row from right to left. Each box represents a stitch.

All Drop-Down DC stitches are marked with an “X” and all SC BLO stitches are blank.

Pattern of 12 repeats 8 times in a 96 stitch.

Video

In this video, I’ll walk you through the full process of crocheting the Maze Pouch - a beautiful and detailed project worked in mosaic crochet in the round. We’ll begin with a clean oval base and build up the intricate mosaic pattern round by round using two contrasting colors. Even though the design may look complex at first glance, I’ll guide you through each step slowly and clearly, so you can enjoy the process and see the pattern come to life.
